Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Cook the manicotti shells in boiling salted water for about 8 minutes until al dente. Drain and cool.
- In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté chopped onion for about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add ground beef or sausage to the skillet, breaking it apart. Cook for about 8 minutes until fully browned.
- Pour in crushed tomatoes and Italian seasoning. Simmer for about 10 minutes to meld flavors.
- In a bowl, combine ricotta, mozzarella, and salt/pepper to prepare the cheese filling.
- Fill each manicotti shell with the cheese mixture, then place in a baking dish.
- Pour half the meat sauce over the shell, sprinkle with mozzarella, then pour remaining sauce. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving and garnish with parmesan and basil.
