  • 1 pound Italian sausage choose mild or spicy
  • 2 medium Onions finely sliced
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter used for sautéing onions
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil to prevent butter from burning
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh thyme leaves or ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese shredded
For Assembly
  • 1 Egg beaten, for egg wash
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat and add onions. Cook for about 20 minutes until caramelized.
  3. Add minced garlic, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper to the onions and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Remove from heat to cool.
  4. In another skillet, cook the Italian sausage over medium heat until fully browned. Drain excess fat and let cool.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooled sausage with the onion mixture and shredded Gruyère cheese.
  6. Roll out the puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface.
  7. Cut each pastry sheet into rectangles approximately 4 inches by 6 inches.
  8. Spoon a generous amount of the filling onto one end of the pastry rectangle.
  9. Fold the other end of the pastry over the filling and securely seal the edges.
  10. Place the filled rolls on the baking tray, brush with beaten egg, and bake for about 20-25 minutes.
  11. Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving.
